History

BJP Presidents

 Since its formation in 1980, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has had several presidents who have significantly influenced the party's direction and policies. Here is a list of the presidents over the years:

  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee (1980–1986)
  • The founding president of the BJP, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji later became the first Prime Minister from the party.
  • Lal Krishna Advani (1986–1990, 1993–1998, 2004–2005)
  • Shri L K Advani ji served multiple terms and is noted for his long tenure, during which he shifted the party's ideology towards Hindutva.
  • Murli Manohar Joshi (1991–1993)
  • Known for his affiliation with the RSS, Shri Murli Manohar Joshi's presidency marked a significant period for the BJP as it became the principal opposition party.
  • Kushabhau Thakre (1998–2000)
  • Shri Kushabhau Thakre ji was involved with the RSS since its early days and led the party during a crucial time.
  • Bangaru Laxman (2000–2001)
  • Shri Bangaru Laxman ji was the first Dalit president of the BJP and served for a brief period.
  • K. Jana Krishnamurthy (2001–2002)
  • Shri K. Jana Krishnamurthy ji took over after Shri Bangaru Laxman and served until mid-2002.
  • M. Venkaiah Naidu (2002–2004)
  • Shri M Venkaiah Naidu's term ended after the BJP lost the 2004 general elections.
  • Rajnath Singh (2005–2009, 2013–2014)
  • Shri Rajnath Singh ji served two terms, with a significant role in the party's campaign for the 2014 elections.
  • Nitin Gadkari (2009–2013)
  • Shri Nitin Gadkari ji was the youngest president of the BJP and faced controversies during his tenure.
  • Amit Shah (2014–2019)
  • Shri Amit Shah ji played a crucial role in the party's electoral successes and was instrumental in strategizing the BJP's campaigns.
  • J. P. Nadda (2020–present)
  • Shri J P Nadda ji is the current president, overseeing the party's operations and strategies in the ongoing political landscape.
